In the aftermath of a sacristy fire, Blackburn was asked by the Arch Diocese of Boston to provide fine art disaster restoration to clean and conserve the carved marble altar/reredos at St Katherine Drexel. Our first step was to carefully clean all surfaces with a Hepa vacuum. After testing the marble surfaces, it was determined that much of the soot and smoke had absorbed into the marble’s delicate carvings. In the end, we were able to develop a treatment plan using a poultice and water to carefully lift off and rise away the stains and discoloration.
