Tower Clock Gilding: Wesleyan University Chapel

Middletown, Connecticut

During the restoration of the Chapel exterior, we were asked to conserve and renew the gold leaf on the four clock dials, including the numerals.  We were able to remove the hands and numerals and complete the leafing in the shop.  When we installed the numerals, we also leafed the minute blocks, using a quick dry exterior size.

As part of the renovation of the chapel interior, stencil motifs representing all of the world’s major religions were to be installed around each of the existing stained glass windows.  Since the designs were taken from painted motifs, they presented a special challenge, since one color often shaded, or was located along side another.  This made application of each color a very exacting procedure.
