Over time, the altar and reredos had become discolored from the heating system and candle soot. In addition, a water leak through the masonry wall had seriously discolored and spalled the limestone altar. For proper altar conservation, the soot was removed with a stone cleaning solution. The mineral salt deposits were removed with a solution formulated for that purpose, as well as light manual abrasion. The missing section was then formed using modeling paste.
